Rise Up is helping to provide education to children who live in La Chureca. Chureca, which is literally translated "scavenger," is one of the largest dump communities in the world. The area is infamous for crime, extreme poverty, and hazardous health conditions. Our teachers and tutors work in a small educational cooperative to give children a chance for a life outside of the waste facility.

The following is an update letter from the Director of the Center in La Chureca-
"Hi-thank you for helping on the school's tutoring program. I'm Sheyla Marenco, director of the center. I send you the reports of the teachers. Teacher Idalia Gallardo takes care of all the students of 2nd, 3rd, 4th grade in the morning and also in the afternoon from 1-3pm. Some success that have come out lately with the program are the children participate more frequently, their writing is more clear, they are more social to the fact that they talk among each other about their in-class successes, they are more responsible in their homework and in organization of their notebooks. Than after their assigned homework they work on their hands-on activities.
Teacher Josefa Fernandez: she takes care of 20 children in 1st grade, 4 of which get help in free reading and sentence writing, use of capital letters, separation of words with other words; to the other 16 they are taught in the same rithmic of other students with writing literature, which is to say they follow the same rithmic teaching of ministry of education.
Teacher Marling Espinoza Cerrrato is the one that leads the morning tutoring to the 5th graders and even other older students. At the beginning of the school year, I had difficulties with the parents support - it was very little, but today it has considerably improved by the fact that the parents now have interest in sending them, they complete they homework. Also the students have improve in the group activities, improving their spelling and writing as they do their compositions, and the older ones are focusing on their writing and reading comprehension.
The other two teachers are Norman Velasquez Esquivel who takes cares 2nd and 3rd grade in the afternoon seccion with the same quantity of 20 students, and Graciela, she takes care in the afternoon the 4th grade by helping them with homework and explaining subjects that they did not comprehend in the class.
In conclusion, as the director, I would like to tell you that the percentage of academic achievements has increased considerably during the tutoring times up to 85%, where before it was very low since the children did not have anyone who could help them with their homework, clarifications of subjects, they did not finish their homework and were very little interested in their education. For these facts, we give thanks to you and the support that you have brought.
May God bless you, sincerely, Sheyla Morenco Orozco"
